2017, Here I Come!

I've Been Bit! :: A Travel Blog >> Ready Or Not, 2017 Here I Come!

Last month I turned 27, and if you’ve read my Goals, Pledges & Resolutions from last year, you know that instead of making resolutions for the calendar year (aka 2017), I make them for my birthday year! It just so happens that the last digit of my age coincides with the calendar year so I’m 27 years old in 2017 – pretty cool eh?

Now that we’re a week into 2017, I have to admit that my 26th year on this planet was pretty eventful! I was able to cross off quite a few of my resolutions. Despite landing a full-time job, I was able to still feed my wanderlust with local adventures, including completing my Ontario Summer Bucket List. Check out my accomplishments for 2(01)6!

  1. Travel to at least one new country this year.
I was able to visit not one but TWO new countries! A surprise adventure to Nassau in The Bahamas for Robin’s 30th birthday and a quick stopover in Warsaw, Poland on my way to Europe meant I knocked this one out of the park!
  2. Cross off a bucket list item.
I had never rung in the new year outside of North America before… until this year! 2017’s already off to a great start!
  3. Travel solo more often.
Sure did! Whether it was a few day trips to go hiking, an overnight adventure to explore the Bruce Peninsula or a pit-stop on a larger trip, I spread these wings and took it on solo!
  4. Get outside!
Check! Despite a full-time job putting the kybosh on weekday adventures, I was sure to get my dose of fresh air on weekends!
  5. Visit somewhere new at least twice a month.
While I didn’t keep track of this entirely, I’m almost positive I blew this one out of the water. Whether it was a new restaurant, a new conservation area or a new country, I made sure to give myself lots of variety. It’s the spice of life after all!
  6. Give I’ve Been Bit! a makeover.
Pretty sure this was the first one I managed to nail down for 2(01)6, and I must say I’m still happy with how IBB looks!
  7. Start merging my two passions – design and travel.
So here’s the one that got away. Despite the perk of a steady paycheque, unfortunately it meant my free time was cut in half and so this was thrown on the back burner… maybe 2017 will allow me to take another stab at this!
  8. Step more outside my comfort zone.
My first solo adventure in Europe knocked this one out of the park, along with my first ever blogger conference!
  9. Network more.
I’ve made so many new friends and had new adventures thanks to networking. I had a blast at WITS16, and I’m already excited for the next one! Not only this, but I’ve been able to enjoy many local adventures with two of my best hiking buddies – Lauren of Justin Plus Lauren and Steph of The World As I See It! These gals keep me trekkin’ and I love every moment of it!
  10. Try a new recipe once a week.
…time was not on my side for this one. Alas, my Pinterest board of recipes will have to wait until I have the time and energy to indulge.
  11. Take advantage of my new location.
Despite being a bit nervous of heading back to Kitchener, overall it’s been great. I’ve got my first full-time big girl job and reacquainted with the city… so much that we’re moving to a different part of town that’s even better than where we are!
  12. Be smart with money.
Over the course of 2016 I’ve been able to find a few tricks to save some pennies… but also make a few more – for free!

With a completion rate of over 80%, I’d say I did a damn good job in 2(01)6! The big question though: what do I have planned for 2(01)7? It’s already shaping up to being a great year, but here are my goals for this new start! Yes there may be fewer, but I’d say some of these are a bit, erm, intense.

I've Been Bit! :: A Travel Blog >> 2017 Resolutions

#1: Learn German

Might as well start with a big one! While I was in Germany over the holidays, I noticed that compared to when I was there in the summer of 2015 my fluency hadn’t changed much – and I mean this in a good way. Despite barely using German for 18 months, I could still understand the majority of the conversation (and at times possibly a little more) and even contribute every once in a while! This inspired me to keep on truckin’ with it and so here’s my first resolution! Duolingo is going to become my best friend, along with my practicing partner and translator (Robin’s definitely looking forward to not having this position anymore). If you want to learn along with me, I created a club on Duolingo so use the code 5P2UXZ and let’s sprechen Deutsch!

#2: Better Manage My Time

The more things I have on the go, the more I’m having trouble finding time to do everything I want and do it well. Instead of trying to constantly multitask and half-ass everything, I pledge to dedicate time for certain things. Will everything get done that I want? Probably not, but at least what will get done will be done to the best of my ability. This includes social time, working on the blog, and personal time… that last one I REALLY have to work on.

#3: Share The Love

Last year I started my #FeatureFriday posts on Instagram! While sometimes I’ve neglected the occasional Friday, I’ve really enjoyed seeing so many beautiful travel photos with my hashtag. I have a few die hard accounts that continually use my hashtag, and I’m so grateful to you! However I’d love to get the word out more about my hashtag. The sole purpose of it is to share what amazing adventures others are experiencing and spread their story to the world. You don’t have to be a blogger or a pro photographer – I just want to see beautiful travel photos and people enjoying life!!

#4: Make My Bucket List

That elusive bucket list that is always floating around in my head but I’ve never bothered to write it down – 2017 will be the year!! Despite being able to cross a few off in the past few years, I need to make a physical record so I can really see my progress. What better way to live life to the fullest than to record a list of all the things you want to do… and slowly cross them off!

How is 2017 shaping up for you? I’ve already got a few adventures coming along the pipeline, including a trip to Grey County in a few weeks along with Wanderful‘s Women in Travel Summit in Milwaukee, WI.  From there who knows, but knowing me the weekends will quickly fill and I’ll soon be galavanting the countryside… right after I pack up my life and move it a few blocks away to the new apartment Robin & I will call home!
