When heading to Milwaukee for Wanderful’s Women In Travel Summit this past April, I was intrigued about visiting the city. I had heard many great things, with one of them being the infamous Milwaukee Bloody Mary. Now as a Canadian, I was pretty skeptical. We’re quite proud of Caesars (no, not the salad), and to be honest the Bloody Marys I’ve had in the past did not compare. I have to say, the Milwaukee Bloody Mary has won this Canadian over – along with the variety! Want to find out just how versatile it is? Read on!
For Those Loosy-Goosy Kind of Nights
Café Benelux‘s Milwaukeean Turned Rad Barbie
Take a walk on the wild side! Now you’ll have to pay a little attention to this one since you could miss it if you don’t read the menu carefully. Café Benelux’s Milwaukeean sounds delicious already, however if you look at the finer print you’ll see you can kick it up a notch. What’s that? BBQ Bloody Mix? Yes, BBQ sauce is in the mix – it may sound crazy, but take a chance. I swear you’re like it. I’m still dreaming about the rich, smokey flavour. Also if you have enough of them, you’ll definitely feel as rad as Barbie and ready to take on the world!
For When You’re Feeling a Little Hipster
Swig‘s Bloody Mary with House-Made Cucumber Vodka
For those times when regular vodka just isn’t going to cut it. Let’s get a little fancy! Swig is a beautiful restaurant in the Third Ward with a versatile space. If you’re looking for a more cozy, secluded atmosphere then head for the back of the restaurant. Otherwise, take in the beautiful sunlight at the front of the restaurant or on their patio. Swig is famous for their house-infused liquors which they proudly display behind the bar. While I highly suggest the cucumber vodka, I’m sure they’d make you a Bloody Mary with one of their other vodka infusions like their basil vodka.
For Those Tequila Kind of Nights (Or Days, No Judgement Here)
Margarita Paradise‘s Bloody Mária
If vodka’s not quite your style, don’t panic. Head for Milwaukee’s Public Market. Here you’ll find Margarita Paradise, a fantastic Mexican restaurant with their own spin on the Bloody Mary. Subtract the vodka, add tequila and some house-pickled veggies and you’ve got yourself a Bloody Mária! Be careful though since you know what they say – one tequila, two tequila, three tequila…
For When Something’s a Little Fishy…
St Paul Fish Company‘s Lobster Bloody Mary
Is a friend blowing you off and making excuses for things? Or are you just missing some amazing east coast ocean vibes? For a few extra bucks, you can indulge in the deliciousness the St Paul Fish Company serves. Also located in Milwaukee’s Public Market, it’s a great way to get some liquid courage to confront those fish stories. Oh, and a great place to start a Bloody Mary crawl considering the close proximity to its Public Market partner above!
For Dinner and A Show?
Sobelmans‘ Bloody Beast
Now this one calls for some help from your friends. Be prepared for some head turns when you order it (and even a few photo requests!). This bad boy doesn’t mess around – you know you’re in for a wild night when you have bacon-wrapped cheese balls, cheeseburger sliders AND a fried chicken. It serves 4 people, but 3 can definitely take it down (true story). If you’re taking it on as a duo or even solo (kudos to those warriors), be sure to have a safe way home like a cab or Lyft/Uber. Oh, and you’ll be giddy like a school girl with just how MASSIVE this bloody beast is!
When indulging in all of this deliciousness, don’t be confused when your drink is accompanied by a side of beer. The Milwaukee Bloody Mary comes with a beer chaser, which is a surprising bonus for us non-locals! It’s suggested you drink it as you devour your Bloody Mary, however you can take the chaser down first or save it for the end. The world is your oyster! And if you’ve had a few too many the night before, one Milwaukee Bloody Mary will make you right as rain to take on the world again!
A huge thank you to Milwaukee Food & City Tours for showing me some of these amazing suggestions. I totally would have missed out on some amazing Bloody Marys if it weren’t for them! A big thank you as well to Visit Milwaukee & Wanderful for their hospitality and organization while us WITS17 ladies were in town. All reviews and opinions are my own.
