For Christmas I both gave and received a fair number of Groupons with the intent of having some fun things to do this winter. Although as life happens, time flew and I had only used 1 of 6 Groupons in the past 3 months. I now have 5 on the verge of expiring, and my partner Robin has even more Groupons as well, so it’s crunch time. However our mid-week Staycation a few days ago allowed us to nix a few, so we’re well on our way to Groupon freedom! Merry Christmas in April!
When I say Staycation, I mean that I’m a local St Catharines girl and we spent a night in Niagara Falls – about a 20min drive. Our Groupons gave us a stay at the Four Points by Sheraton for about $90, which included vouchers for $70 at Ruth’s Chris Steak House, $20 at Outback Steakhouse, $10 for IHOP, and a $25 slot credit. We actually didn’t have enough time (or room in our bellies) to use all of the vouchers, as we also needed to use a Groupon for the arcade close by that I got for Christmas.
We checked into our room early evening and were given a room on the 12th floor with a city view. Although the rainy weather we’ve been having made for not much of a view at all due to a combination of hanging mist from The Falls and fog. We relaxed for a little bit as Robin had just finished a big final assignment, and enjoyed our comfy bed by jumping on it like a pair of 12 year olds. Eventually hunger got the better of us and we wandered down to Ruth’s Chris. Overall the food was wonderful, however our service was terrible. We opted for the set 5 course meal to spoil ourselves a little, but this was a mistake as it took us 2.5h to get through our meal… and that’s after we asked for the bill with our final course! It’s one thing if we were actually eating for that long, but at one point we had to wait over 50min for our next course!
Although we didn’t let that get the better of us as we did leave with bellies full of delicious food, and made our way to the arcade. We only had about an hour to play as Google lied to us and told us it was open until 2am, when it was actually only open until midnight. This didn’t stop us from running around like children (this is starting to become a theme…) and playing some air hockey, knocking over clowns, and rounding out the evening with some Dance Dance Revolution. Robin hated me for that one!
By this point it was almost 12:30am and we were contemplating going to the casino, but we made the mistake of sitting on the bed. It was lights out shortly after that as we put ourselves and our food babies to bed. In the morning we enjoyed a little bit nicer of a view as the fog had lifted, so we could actually see a little bit of the Horseshoe Falls! I admired the view as we finished getting ready to leave. Check out was at noon (which is how all hotels should do it!) and it was brunch time at IHOP. A relaxed morning with yummy breakfast food was the perfect way to finish our staycation before we made our way to The Ice House Winery for an ice wine tasting in the cutest little winery in Niagara on the Lake! You’ll hear more about that in a later post, so stay tuned!
Overall, despite a few minor setbacks, our Staycation was just what we needed for a reset. To quote Tom Haverford and Donna Meagle – sometimes you just gotta treat yoself!
