Unique Winter Getaways in Quebec for an Authentically Magical Experience
The definition of the word authentic is “of undisputed origin; genuine.” and that is the perfect way to describe Lanaudière-Mauricie. History and tradition are balanced with contemporary and modern elements to offer you experiences that embody the uniqueness of Quebec.
While many tend to flock to Montreal or even Quebec City, I highly recommend opting for the gems that reside between the two which remain unbeknownst to many. It may be tempting to stop at the province’s largest city but I urge you to drive the extra 90-ish minutes and explore the treasures that await you.

For Those Who Love History, Architecture & Treating the Taste Buds
This is a city that’s been on my radar for years as my father was a marine engineer who sailed the Great Lakes. His work brought him to Trois-Rivières on a fairly regular basis so it was really neat to finally visit myself after growing up hearing about it.
Say hello to the second oldest French speaking city in North America! Founded in 1634, Trois-Rivières was named by the French explorer Samuel de Champlain for the three channels at the mouth of the Saint-Maurice River that feed into the great Saint Lawrence River. Sitting at this confluence, its rich history continues to be preserved as past and present coexist to protect it.
SOMETHING TO NOTE: If you’re not a strong French speaker like me and are concerned about this, not to worry! Knowing a few basic phrases like hello and thank you is always appreciated but most folks speak some English so you shouldn’t have any problems.
While it has come a long way since its days as a trading post, the grit that comes with being the birthplace of industry for New France still rings true. You’ll see tanker ships along the waterfront and the impact of the pulp and paper industry is intertwined with the city’s identity. There’s a desire to do things differently as you discover the passion for innovation at the heart of Trois-Rivières.
Things to Do in Trois-Rivières
Trois-Rivières is a popular weekend trip from Montreal or Quebec City due to its close proximity but it’s a great destination for Ontarians and other tourists alike! Here are some of the fantastic attractions to check out during your visit.
Walk Through the Historic Quarter
Whenever you find yourself in Trois-Rivières, exploring the historic quarter is a must. Slow down and soak in the stunning architecture that the city constantly works to protect. If an individual wishes to restore a building, the city will help fund the repairs to keep the historical facade intact. It’s always amazing when local agencies work to protect the history of an area! Some notable buildings are the Église St. James which has become a collection of spaces dedicated to puppetry and theatre and Le Manoir Boucher de Niverville, one of Canada’s oldest private residences.
If you’re like me and love to know more about the streets you’re exploring, this digital guide to the city may be of interest to you. Go at your own pace as you visit quintessential destinations within Trois-Rivières such as the Musée des Ursulines and L’Assomption Cathedral. While it doesn’t include entrance fees to a number of the attractions on the tour, that means you can spend as much time as you like diving deeper into the stops that interest you most!
Hunt for Street Art
I always love cities that breathe life into the buildings with exterior art. Whether its with sculptures or murals is of no consequence to me! I’m thrilled to say that Trois-Rivières is home to numerous murals and hunting for them is such a fun way to discover the city.
While my time in Trois-Rivières was shorter than I’d have liked, I still managed to spot a number of stunning masterpieces as I meandered around town. If you’d like to know more about some of the murals, check out this article by Trois-Rivières Tourism which highlights a few of the artists and the meaning behind their works.
Oh and don’t forget to snag a photo in front of the Trois-Rivières mural on Rue St Antoine! You can find it here.

Tour the Mother of All Prisons
As a true crime fan, learning about the darker sides of a destination has always tickled my fancy. So when I was told visiting Trois-Rivières’ Old Prison was one of the city’s must dos, I knew I couldn’t miss it.
As longest surviving correctional facility in the province, it was nicknamed the “Mother of All Prisons” due to its long operating life and harsh conditions. Designed for just 40 inmates, it often housed closer to 100 with convicts being sentenced with anything from loitering and speeding to prostitution and murder. Because of the close quarters, it meant those charged with minor offences were often forced to coexist with those of steeper sentences – which added to the ruthlessness of the facility.
I highly recommend a guided tour so you can enjoy more insights into the inner workings of this iconic destination. It’s fascinating to hear the tales of what occurred with these walls, especially those of the solitary confinement dungeons below ground.
Learn About Quebec Culture at POP
Conveniently connected to the Old Prison, Musée Pop or the Pop Museum is dedicated to celebrating Quebec’s society and the unique identity of the province. Inside you’ll find a variety of exhibitions highlighting different facets of Quebec’s popular culture. Many of the exhibitions rotate on a seasonal basis though some are permanent staples within the museum.
If you’ve explored the Old Prison, I recommend checking out the In the Big House: Prisons, a solution? as this permanent exhibit is a great compliment to it. You’ll learn more about Quebec’s correctional system, the public’s perception of it, and video testimony from those who have experienced it. It’s fascinating to see artifacts from the years the prison operated as you reflect on your own understand and possible misconceptions of this pivotal system within society.
One of the other fantastic exhibitions is Attache ta tuque! which celebrates Quebec culture. A thousand Québec citizens were surveyed to shape the topics showcased within the displays – how cool is that? Visitors will learn about the most unique aspects of Quebec’s society: cuisine, hockey, First Nations, tales and legends, music and more. It’s incredibly interactive and allows you to make your own connections with these important elements of the province!
Sip Spirits at the Mariana Distillery
For those who love their spirits, Mariana distillery is not to be missed. Each of their liquors highlights the flavours distinctly found in Quebec’s botany and terroir. Founded in 2014, the name Mariana symbolizes this as it’s derived from the Latin name, Picea mariana, for black spruce, a symbol of the boreal forest whose flavours embody their first liquor – Canopée forest gin.
They have so many incredible spirits to try that it’s worth the walk during the winter nights so you can enjoy to the fullest while doing so responsibly. Head into the boutique for a tasting where you can learn more about what makes each of their products unique as well as the stories behind them. If you have Isabelle, you’re in great hands – please say hello for me! Make sure you try their Grand Voyageurs maple whiskey liqueur as I promise it will be a treat for your taste buds.
Afterwards, head upstairs to their restaurant where you can enjoy a fantastic cocktail using their spirits as well as some incredible eats. This is yet another avenue with Mariana highlights the local terroir and flavours that embody Quebec culture. I highly recommend visiting with a friend, partner or your family so you can share dishes. Why try one when you can try multiple? Kat and I indulged in their bison tartare, burrata, Mariana nachos, and rainbow trout tartare – with the latter being my favourite. Take a peek at their menu to see what will tickle your fancy!
Where to Stay in Trois-Rivières
After a long drive in from Niagara, I was happy to rest my head at the Delta Hotel by Marriott in the heart of Trois-Rivières. This recently renovated hotel and conference centre offers a number of amenities including an indoor pool and fitness centre alongside their fantastic location within the historic district. As per the Marriott standard, each room is outfitted with modern aesthetics and everything one comes to expect with a great hotel stay including incredibly comfortable beds, a great internet connection, in-room coffee maker and more.
If you’re like me and are skeptical of hotel restaurants, I can say without a doubt that Le Brasier 1908 is not to be overlooked. Referencing the devastating fire that occurred in 1908, Le Brasier 1908 draws its inspiration from the tenacity of the city as it rebuilt from such a catastrophic event. Their breakfast menu features hearty eats that will keep you fuelled to tackle any obstacle the day throws your way. I absolutely loved their ham and Swiss eggs benedict which arrived alongside seasoned home fries and some fresh fruit. A great balance to kickstart your morning!
However, I know staying at chains aren’t always everyone’s cup of tea, myself included. If you’re looking for a more boutique option for your stay, especially if you’re planning on an extended getaway (which I highly recommend) then you may want to check out some of the other hotels in Trois-Rivières. I’m definitely eyeballing the Hotel Oui GO! for my next visit to the city!

For Those Who Desire An Immersive Winter Getaway
This is a one stop shop for all things winter! If you’re a fan of the season, you will immediately fall in love with Le Baluchon. However, if you’re unsure and still trying to find ways to embrace the ice and snow, a winter getaway here might just do the trick.
Things to Do at Le Baluchon
If you’re looking for an authentic Quebec experience, planning a winter escape to Le Baluchon is a must. I wouldn’t call this a hotel but rather a destination all on its own as guests are surrounded by a thousand acres of nature in Saint-Paulin. Le Baluchon celebrates the natural beauty of its location which will make it not just an escape but an experience that touches all of your senses.
Enjoy Some Winter Activities
Wander the 35 kilometres of trails as you explore Le Baluchon’s beautiful property. In the winter months, guests can slip into their hiking boots, glide along the routes with some cross-country skiing or a pair of ski-skates, strap on a pair of snowshoes or tackle the trails on a fat bike. Guests staying overnight can enjoy these adventures free of charge, but those who are not can enjoy the trails for a daily access fee. You can also rent any gear you may need to enjoy these activities right on site at the equipment centre located next to the property’s main building!
Whether you choose to seek out the adrenaline that comes with fat biking or take it easy with a calm snowshoe in the forest, make sure you explore the riverside boardwalk to the Chute des Trembles. This trail is incredibly picturesque, especially after a fresh snow!
Try Your Hand at Dog Sledding
I think many would agree that dog sledding is a quintessential winter activity in Canada. If you’ve never tried your hand at dog sledding or are looking to make your stay at Le Baluchon truly memorable, be sure to sign up for a tour with Lyliane Gélinas of Akash’s Pack.
Lyliane has loved dogs ever since she was a little girl, but she never would have dreamed her livelihood would involve a pack of 32 canines! These aren’t just sled dogs either – each one has its own story that she’ll happily share with you if asked. Some of these pooches are shelter dogs while some have travelled a long way from remote communities to be given a second chance at life. And what a wonderful life they live!
SOMETHING TO NOTE: While the above activities are included with your stay, dog sledding requires an additional fee and can be booked before or upon arrival.
Make sure you layer up and bring a pair of ski goggles if you have them because these canines are ready to rip! Lyliane and her team will show you the ins and outs of how to control your dogsled. It may take a bit to get used to and don’t be surprised if you fall off as it happens to everyone at least once. Just lean into the adventure as you follow the twists and turns of the trail through the towering boreal forest!

Soak at the Spa
After all of these incredible winter adventures, your body deserves a bit of a treat and what better treat than a nice long soak at Le Baluchon’s spa? Embrace the thermal cycle as you’re surrounded by the natural beauty of Rivière du Loup. Your mind will appreciate it too as the fleeting thoughts of the everyday will be replaced by the mantra of hot, cold, relax repeat.
The spa features two gorgeous outdoor hot tubs, both of which have stunning views of the river. They also have a fantastic sauna where you can enjoy watching the snowflakes slowly flutter from the sky as you’re surrounded by its steamy embrace. Visiting in the winter means you probably won’t need a cold plunge as the air’s frigidness will take care of this for you as you make your way to one of their cozy rest areas inside.
To get the full affects from your spa visit, it’s suggested guests complete the thermal cycle at least three times though you’ll start to feel the relaxation after just one circuit! Guests can enjoy a day at the spa for an additional fee, however spa access is included for those who book a treatment.
Indulge in Some Incredible Eats
Whether your getaway is heavy on the adventure, focused on relaxing, or even a mix of the two, staying fuelled is important. At Le Baluchon, they have two fantastic options to ensure you’re eating well during your visit.
The first is their rustic cafe and restaurant, Au bout du monde Eco-café. Found objects and mechanical parts from an old sawmill adorn the ceiling and walls to craft a unique woodsy vibe that speaks to the region’s history. Open for all three meals, pop in whenever hunger strikes for a true taste of the area as their menu features dishes made with 80% locally-sourced products! I highly recommend their French onion soup as well as their lasagna. Both will warm you on the coldest of winter days!
For dinner, guests have the option of a three-course meal in the Dining Room. Chef Alex Hanna draws his inspiration from the nature surrounding Le Baluchon as he incorporates as many flavours from the local forest terroir as possible. They work with over 25 local and Quebec producers to serve the best quality possible! It will be hard to choose as their menu features some incredible dishes but I highly recommend starting with the trout gravlax as the flavours are absolutely out of this world. I would have had no idea it was fish as it was such a meaty texture and combination of birch syrup and goat cheese is absolutely delightful. Deer is rarely on the menu so I couldn’t resist enjoying that as my main with their haskap mousse for dessert.
INSIDER TIP: You do not have to a guest in order to dine at Le Baluchon! Pop into the Eco Cafe at any time and if you wish to eat at the Dining Room, you must make a reservation.
Another thing I love about Le Baluchon is that they compost not only to enrich their agricultural land but to also encourage organic farming. Way to set a great example for other businesses to follow!
Le Baluchon’s Accommodation Options
As you can see, Le Baluchon goes above and beyond in a multitude of ways and that goes for accommodation as well! They have a variety of options from rustic chalets to large homes perfect for large groups. You can also stay at one of their two lodges which offer private rooms with one or two beds.
Kat and I had the pleasure of staying in one of their luxury ambiance rooms. Ours was incredibly spacious with a queen-size bed as well as a Murphy bed so we both slept soundly in our own spaces. Alongside our cozy beds, guests will enjoy a modern workspace, mini-fridge and coffee maker to round out the room. It was easy to get cozy as there were two large chairs so we could snuggle up by the fireplace as we started our morning with a hot cup of joe. After a busy day of adventuring, my sore muscles absolutely loved the freestanding tub as well as the plush bathrobe I slipped into afterwards. Yes, I still had a soak in the bathtub after our spa visit!

For Those Who Want A Secluded Hygge Experience
Hygge refers to the Scandinavian practice of seeking out cozy qualities that make one feel comfortable and content. In today’s world, I think many of us could use more calm and relaxation in our lives making this escape in Lanaudière-Mauricie a place that should be on everyone’s radar!
Experience Les Boisés de la Rivière Noire
Head to Sainte-Émélie-de-l’Énergie where you will find 12 private chalets scattered amongst the beautiful forest near Vase Lake. They have a variety of configurations which sleep 2 to 6 people and come with everything you could need for your wintery escape. Whether you opt for one of the pods or a yurt, you will be impressed with the attention to detail and impeccable use of the space. Each cabin is equipped with everything you need from cooking utensils to towels to firewood.
For the final night of our girls getaway, Kat and I had the pleasure of staying in Le Mésange cabin. We immediately fired up the wood stove as we settled in to reminisce about our epic winter experiences from this trip! While there is a TV with satellite for those who wish to catch a show, chances are you won’t even touch it as the cabin’s features make it so enticing to unplug. I’ll take a snowshoe along the river over a movie in a heartbeat!
Relax in Your Private Spa
If you’re looking to fully embrace the concept of hygge during your visit, it must include at least one soak in your private hot tub. Yes, every one of their chalets has one! Settle in for a soak at the end of your day or enjoy your morning coffee from the warmth of the tub – I’m certainly a fan of both. You know it’s a good day if it involves some quality time in a hot tub.
Looking to take your relaxation to the next level? Book either the Swallow, Hummingbird or Mésange chalets which also feature a private barrel sauna! All they take is about 15 minutes to warm up and then you can enjoy all of the relaxation that comes with a session in the sauna.
Enjoy a Fondue Dinner
While you’re welcome to bring your own eats, if you’d like a fun and interactive dining experience then you may want to purchase their fondue dinner add-on! Who doesn’t love to arrive with food already waiting in the fridge?!
Designed for two, this tasty meal comes with a package of beef and either chicken or pork as well as some seasoned potatoes, a variety of vegetables and the broth to cook everything in. All you have to do is grab the fondue pot from the cupboard and plug it in to heat the broth before enjoying some amazing conversation as you dip these delicious eats in to cook until your heart’s content! I’ve never done fondue myself and it was honestly so much fun. Plus you get SO much food both Kat and I had leftovers to take home! Your kit will also come with two dipping sauces as well as a little treat for dessert.
If fondue isn’t up your alley, Les Boisés de la Rivière Noire has a few other options for eats to make your stay even more relaxing. Enjoy a BBQ meal for two with filet mignon and haloumi cheese skewers along with sausages, potatoes and a tasty brie cheese starter. Or you can enjoy one of their ready to go meals like lasagna, chicken and vegetables or beef with vegetables that just need to be reheated! All of these come with a soup, roll, and dessert.

Incredible Things to Do Nearby
While it’s easy to spend a few days enjoying the stunning surroundings of your private getaway, it’s always fun to explore the surrounding area. Here are a few places that Kat and I loved visiting during our stay at Les Boisés de la Rivière Noire.
La Source Bains Nordiques – While you may have your own private spa at Les Boisés de la Rivière Noire, the calming vibes you’ll find at La Source are seriously next level. Located in the town of Rawdon, this natural oasis is carved into the mountains as its baths, saunas and cold pools integrate with the property’s lush forest. This is easily one of the most beautiful Nordic spas I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting and their strict silence policy helps add to the tranquility found around every corner. Be sure to grab a bite to eat here as their dishes are so fresh and flavourful to rejuvenate yourself both internally and externally!
Distillerie Grand Dérangement – Say hello to the first organic distillery in Quebec! La Distillerie Le Grand Dérangement name references the horrific deportation of Acadians by the British that occurred in Nova Scotia as well as other parts of the country. If you’ve read some of my Nova Scotia content, it may sound familiar. The town of Saint-Jacques is one of the places where many Acadians fled to and the culture is still widely rooted in its inhabitants! The distillery celebrates this unique culture by sharing about the history of New Acadia while incorporating the determination and grit of the Acadians into their passion of crafting top of the line spirits. I highly recommend booking a tour to learn about the ins and outs of this unique distillery!
Which of These Quebec Winter Vacations Is Your Favourite?
There is something so magical about Quebec in the winter months. I don’t know if it’s the beauty of the province itself or how Quebecers seem to embrace the season wholeheartedly, but every one of my snowy visits has been a magical one.
As with any winter adventures, be sure to allow yourself extra travel time. You never know what Mama Nature could throw at you or how other drivers will react to any snowy conditions. Be sure to check the weather before you depart and adjust your plans accordingly!
Whether you choose the narratives and nourishments you’ll find in Trois-Rivières, embrace all of the winter adventures at Le Baluchon, or decide on a tranquil escape at Les Boisés de la Rivière Noire, your winter holiday in Quebec will be a bright highlight amongst the chilly days of the season.
